Code of Conduct
Sun Prairie RPG Night (“Sun Prairie RPG”) is a community event focused on bringing people together to enjoy tabletop roleplaying games in a welcoming and respectful environment.
To help ensure a welcoming, inclusive, and enjoyable experience for everyone, all participants in Sun Prairie RPG Night events must follow the Code of Conduct outlined below.
Event organizers may take reasonable action to address disruptive behavior or situations not specifically covered by this document.
Community Expectations
- Event Location Rules. Sun Prairie RPG will follow all rules and policies established by the event venue. These may include provisions not specifically listed in this document.
- Be Welcoming and Respectful. Help create a welcoming environment for players of all experience levels and backgrounds. Please respect people's names, pronouns, identities, and personal boundaries.
- No Harassment or Discrimination. Behavior that is deemed to be harassing, aggressive, discriminatory, or otherwise offensive may result in removal from an event or exclusion from future Sun Prairie RPG activities. If an issue arises during an event, please speak with a GM or organizer.
- Respect GM Rulings. Rules discussions are welcome, but should be kept brief. The GM’s ruling for the session is final so that everyone can continue playing and having fun.
- Language and Play Rating. Sun Prairie RPG events are considered PG-13, both in-game and out-of-game. As these events take place in public venues, participants must keep language and subject matter appropriate for a shared public space. Occasional swearing may occur, but excessive profanity, explicit sexual content, sexual violence, graphic gore, and similarly mature themes are not permitted.
- Adult-Oriented Community. Sun Prairie RPG is focused on adult players and Game Masters. While we aim to be welcoming, this community is not intended to serve as a youth gaming program.
Additional GM Expectations
- Be Welcoming to New Players. Many attendees may be playing their first tabletop RPG. Please be patient, explain rules as needed, and plan your session with enough flexibility to accommodate new players and questions.
- Provide Pregens. To help games start on time and remain accessible to new players, GMs should provide pregenerated characters. Exceptions may be approved by the event organizer for games with very fast character creation or where character creation is an intended part of the experience.
- Player Comfort and Safety Tools. Be mindful of player comfort and adjust course if a player appears uncomfortable with a topic, situation, or interaction. Sun Prairie RPG encourages GMs to be familiar with TTRPG safety tools such as the examples listed below. While not required, these tools can help create a welcoming and comfortable table experience.
- Open Door Policy: Players are welcome to step away from the table at any time, for any reason.
- Content Warnings: Briefly mention potentially sensitive themes or content before the game begins.
- X Card: Players may indicate that a topic or situation should be skipped or changed without needing to explain why. This is often done by lifting an index card or paper with a black X on it.
