Our Backstory
Once upon a time in the faraway kingdom of.... just kidding.
Sun Prairie RPG is a tabletop roleplaying game community started by Jon Laager in June 2026. The idea came from seeing people around Sun Prairie and the greater Madison area looking for a way to try tabletop RPGs, find a group, or simply meet some new people. We thought tabletop roleplaying games offered a pretty great excuse to get a bunch of strangers around the same table, roll some dice, tell some stories, laugh together, and hopefully leave feeling a little less like strangers.
Today, Sun Prairie RPG hosts free, beginner-friendly tabletop RPG events at the Sun Prairie Public Library in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, where all players are welcome: from those who have never rolled a d20 before to gamers who have been playing for decades. Our monthly Sun Prairie RPG events give people a chance to try different TTRPG systems, meet local players and Game Masters, and may even find a group of their own. We want to make it as easy as possible to show up, try something new, and meet some good people along the way.
One of the mottos we use a lot is "Show up. Roll dice. Have fun." - and we really do try to live by that.

Our events simply wouldn't be possible without all the amazing volunteer GMs who run games. We try to make it as easy on our GMs as possible, while providing rules to make sure that both players and GMs enjoy the event. So - time for a quick FAQ!
What if I've never GM'd before?
New and experienced GMs are always welcome to run a game at Sun Prairie RPG!
What systems can I run?
Whatever you'd like! Our only requirement? Make sure you are running a one-shot using a system you WANT to run! (Yes - including that book you bought at Gamehole Con four years ago that you've always been meaning to run...) We welcome any TTRPG (as long as it can be run as a one-shot and is appropriate for the venue - so please leave FATAL at home). You don't need to be an expert at the system in order to run it!
How often do I need to run a game?
There isn't any sort of ongoing commitment. You can run one time, a few times, or even every. Single. Time. It's totally up to you!
What do I need to bring?
We only require you bring your adventure, whatever materials you need to run your adventure, and enough pregens for everyone at the table. Oh! And a smile. We will provide you with the other materials you might need like player name tents for the table, pencils, and even 7 piece player dice.
Any other requirements?
The only other things we require from our GMs are:
- Be welcoming and patient with new players.
- Use safety tools in whatever format you're more comfortable with.
- Follow the Code of Conduct, just like everyone else.
